Artic Cat Snowmobiles: A Legacy

Arctic Cat Snowmobiles: A Legacy

In 1960, snowmobile pioneer Edgar Hetteen broke away from Polaris to launch Polar Manufacturing, soon rebranded as Arctic Enterprises—the precursor to Arctic Cat. That very year, the first Arctic Cat snowmobile hit the trails, setting in motion a legacy rooted in innovation and awesome.

Today, its engineering and assembly hub remains steadfast in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, with engines rolling off the line in St. Cloud.

Engineering Triumphs and Trail Innovations

Arctic Cat brought innovation to the snow with the slide-rail suspension in 1968—a game-changer that enhanced control and handling. This spirit of engineering excellence continued with the development of the AWS (Arctic Walker Suspension) and the ZR series, known for its muscle and precision.

Their Thundercat series, launched in 1993, epitomized power—boasting a 900cc triple-cylinder engine that achieved a then-record top speed of 113 mph. The series made a triumphant return in 2017 with the ZR 9000 Thundercat, now powered by a Yamaha-made 998cc turbocharged 4-stroke engine delivering over 200 hp.

Racing DNA & Resilience

Arctic Cat has always raced not just for glory, but as a proving ground—honing performance with every lap.

In 2025, a new ownership led by Brad Darling (a former Arctic Cat executive) revived the company—restoring hundreds of jobs and bringing back Team Arctic to the 2025–2026 racing season. Production has resumed across Minnesota, starting with youth sleds like the Kitty Cat, and off-road side-by-sides.

Thriving Amid Industry Challenges

Amid an industry contraction—fueled by milder winters, steep equipment costs, and waning participation—Arctic Cat stands among only four enduring brands. The company’s unwavering fan loyalty and commitment to innovation keep the brand alive and kicking.

Arctic Cat’s success is due to resilience, engineering, and community devotion. From pioneering suspension systems and record-breaking sleds to overcoming economic setbacks and leading today’s revival, it continues to define winter adventure.

Grab a sled, get out there, and blaze those fresh powder trails!
